Job Summary: The Unlicensed Dental Assistant (UDA) provides clinical and administrative support to the dental team under the direction and supervision of a Minnesota-licensed dentist or dental therapist.
The UDA assists with patient care, operatory preparation, infection control, clinical support, documentation support, and other duties permitted under Minnesota Statutes and Minnesota Board of Dentistry rules.
Job Responsibilities: Clinical Chairside Assistance Under the supervision required by Minnesota Rules, the UDA may: Assist the dentist or dental therapist during dental procedures.Retract the patient's cheek, tongue, or other tissue during treatment.Assist with placement or removal of isolation devices and materials as directed by the dentist or dental therapist.Remove debris, fluids, or water generated during treatment using suction devices.Provide chairside assistance during dental procedures.Place articles and topical medications in the patient's oral cavity when authorized and supervised as required by Minnesota Rules.Assist the dentist, dental hygienist, and licensed dental assistant with delegated procedures when permitted by Minnesota Rules.
Procedures Permitted Under Specific Supervision When the applicable supervision requirements are met, the UDA may: Apply fluoride varnish under the supervision requirements established by Minnesota law and Board of Dentistry rules.Assist dental hygienists and licensed dental assistants with procedures delegated to them when permitted by applicable rules.
Other Clinical Support Functions Take and record vital signs, including pulse rate and blood pressure, as directed by the dentist.Complete preliminary charting of the oral cavity and surrounding structures, excluding periodontal structures.Prepare and clean treatment operatories.Perform sterilization and instrument-processing procedures after receiving appropriate training.Assist with patient positioning and comfort.Prepare materials and instruments for dental procedures.Maintain appropriate clinical supplies and inventory.
Patient and Office Support Prepare treatment rooms and equipment before and after patient appointments.Maintain appropriate inventory and clinical supplies.Follow office procedures for instrument processing, sterilization, disinfection, and infection prevention.Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality.Document information within the employee's authorized role.Assist the dental team with routine administrative and clinical workflow.Perform other nonclinical duties appropriate to the position and permitted by law.
Maintain necessary CPR certification as required by Minnesota state law and ODHC policy.
