Tool and Die Maker

Summary

The Tool Maker Lead is responsible for overseeing and performing complex tool and die work, including the design, fabrication, maintenance, and repair of tooling used in automotive manufacturing processes.

This leadership role combines hands-on toolmaking expertise with supervisory responsibilities, guiding a team of toolmakers to ensure all tooling meets quality, safety, and production standards.

Acts as the primary point of contact for all tooling-related issues and supports strategic production initiatives.

This role plays a critical part in minimizing downtime, enhancing tooling performance, and supporting lean manufacturing objectives.

Job Duties


* Lead the tooling team and coordinate daily activities, providing guidance, support, and mentorship to Tool Makers and apprentices.


* Ensure all team members are working in compliance with health and safety policies, wearing appropriate PPE, and using machinery correctly.


* Act as the first point of contact for troubleshooting and resolving complex die and tooling issues.


* Review blueprints, drawings, and production feedback to assign and delegate tasks accordingly.


* Collaborate with other departments such as Engineering, Production, and Quality Assurance to drive resolution of tooling issues and improve processes.


* Oversee the building, modification, and repair of dies to meet production needs.


* Drive initiatives to improve tooling life, performance, and efficiency.


* Maintain and enforce housekeeping standards within the tooling area.


* Conduct tool audits and ensure that preventative maintenance schedules are followed.


* Participate in production planning meetings and provide input on tooling readiness and capacity.


* Report on team performance and contribute to training plans and evaluations.

Requirements


* High school diploma or GED required; technical school or apprenticeship completion strongly preferred.


* 5+ years of experience in tool and die making or metal stamping, preferably in the automotive industry.


* 2+ years in a lead or supervisory role in a tooling environment preferred.


* Possess a Provincial Trade License or equivalent experience.


* Strong blueprint reading and technical interpretation skills.


* Proven ability to lead a team and prioritize competing demands.
