Summer Researcher

Job Description

Develops,designs and conducts research projects.

Education: Bachelors Degree and at least 1 year of related experience or equivalent in education, training and experience.

The student will conduct the following research:

When multiple IoT platforms have views and control over IoT devices in the same physical space, many problems can arise.

For example, assume a user has installed an app A that unlocks the door when she returns home, and another app B running on another platform that locks the door one minute after the returning.

Then, when the user returns home, both platforms will sense the same event at different time; as a result, B may issue its command first, while A does it later, leaving the door unlocked and causing disordered actions.

As another example, App 1 installed on a platform may trigger App 2 installed on another platform, causing confusing, undesired, or hazardous automation.

Existing IoT works mostly assume a single IoT platform is used in a smart environment, and cannot reveal or handle these problems.

The student will work on handling Multi-Platform Coexistence (MPC) problems.

To handle MPC problems, there exist two main challenges: different IoT platforms and heterogeneous IoT devices need to be considered, and a variety of MPC problems have to be handled.

We will design and deploy a mediator at a smart environment that bridges IoT devices and various IoT platforms.

The mediator will inspect and mediate outgoing IoT events and incoming commands.

Based on the mediator, a set of effective, efficient, and generalizable solutions will be designed and built, thereby overcoming the main challenges above.

We also aim at practical solutions, i.e., without modifications of IoT device firmware or cooperation from IoT platforms.

New system designs, analysis techniques, and algorithms will be devised and implemented to enable and facilitate these solutions.

This is a part time hourly position.
