Archaeology Intern

Responsibilities:


* Perform a variety of field-related tasks including mapping, munsell readings, writing field notes, taking photographs.


* Become proficient in compass navigation and operation of hand-held GPS or similar devices.


* Assist in maintenance of field equipment and supplies.


* Assist in geomorphological investigations.


* Assist in archaeological reconnaissance surveys and shovel testing.


* Assist in the further delineation of archaeological resources identified during survey via shovel testing and/or excavation of larger test units.


* Assist in the identification of cultural features and artifacts.


* Assist in site set-up (e.g., site clearing, grid establishment).


* Assist in the transportation of artifacts from work site to lab.


* Assist with washing, labeling, cataloging, and analysis of artifacts.


* Assist in artifact and records curation.


* Assist in report production, including technical writing and graphic production.


* Assist in public outreach and education (e.g., development of storymaps, posters, booklets, etc.)


* Other duties as assigned.

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS


* Enrolled in a master's degree program in Anthropology with at least 1 year of coursework.


* Excellent English language skills, both written and verbal including technical writing.


* Must have strong organizational skills.


* Must have valid Driver's License and personal transportation to/from job sites and/or office.

Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that may be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this internship.

Standard in-field work session consists of eight, 10-hour days in all seasons with six days off between field sessions, if necessary.

Work environment is typically outdoors, sometimes under adverse weather conditions, requiring appropriate clothing (e.g., work boots, rain gear, cold-weather gear).

At minimum, field technicians are required to have the following personal field tools: backpack, compass, English/Metric tape measure, trowel (e.g., Marshalltown), line level, clip board, pencils, work gloves.

Must be able to walk, hike over various terrains, sometimes over great distances (average daily walking distance up to 2 miles), while carrying both personal and company equipment (e.g., shovels, screens).

Must be able to lift heavy loads (e.g., soil-filled buckets) up to 50 lbs.

Job requires repeated bending, lifting, screening, kneeling, and digging.

Standard non-field (e.g., in home/office or lab) workdays are 8 hours.

Must be able to lift boxes up to 50 lbs.

Laboratory work often requires repeated bending, lifting, kneeling, and artifact processing.

Should be familiar with typical computer desktop software packages such as Microsoft Word, Access, and Excel.

Knowledge of GIS applications a plus.
