POSITION OVERVIEW

The Reading Specialist is a literacy leader responsible for implementing a comprehensive literacy program at the assigned school by being a teacher model, supporting, and guiding teachers in best practices for literacy instruction. 

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Curriculum Development and Instruction


* Provide direct instruction in the areas of reading and writing for identified groups and individual students, with an emphasis on emergent, beginning, and transitional readers.


* Responsible for providing direct instruction to students, individually, in small groups, or in full groups, to enable students to develop literacy skills.


* Use data to inform instructional decisions.


* Provide students daily feedback on mastery performance in character and academics and plan for individual learning needs.


* Collaborate with and coach teachers on using assessment data to plan instruction; analyze school literacy data and plan for future literacy needs. 

Commitment to School and Classroom Culture


* Facilitate strong reading instructional strategies through:
+ Co-teaching to model reading instruction.
+ Observing and providing feedback.


* Identify literature for use in all content areas in support of the curriculum. 


* Provide curriculum support and training for teachers.


* Be a model of teacher techniques in a variety of settings (whole group and small group) and provide follow-up support.  


* In collaboration with school and regional leadership, select tier 2 instructional materials to meet student needs.  


* Supports School Leadership with organizational wide literacy practices and policies.


* Contribute to the ongoing development of Literacy related learning and development initiatives, specifically providing expertise to create a successful learning environment for students

* Establish and maintain strong communication lines with all parents and share progress


* Be available for open houses, parent teacher conferences and other events involving parents
