Primary Function:
The Senior Civil Designer IV independently performs the most advanced civil drafting and design tasks in support of municipal utility and public works projects in the Houston area.
This role works closely with engineers to translate hydrologic and hydraulic (H&H) analyses into clear, constructible plan sets for sanitary sewer, water pipelines serving water and wastewater treatment facilities, force mains, and storm drainage systems.
This position is primarily focused on municipal utility infrastructure rather than roadway or TXDOT transportation design.
Primary Responsibilities:
* Prepare advanced civil design drawings for municipal water, wastewater, sanitary sewer, force mains, and storm drainage systems, including plan-and-profile sheets, details, and quantities
* Develop design deliverables using AutoCAD and Civil 3D primarily for utility, conveyance, and drainage infrastructure (experience with MicroStation or OpenRoads Designer is a plus)
* Apply City of Houston standards and Infrastructure Design Manual (IDM) criteria; limited TXDOT coordination as required
* Support the preparation of plan and profile drawings informed by hydrologic and hydraulic (H&H) analyses provided by engineering staff
* Coordinate utility layouts with existing infrastructure, drainage systems, and limited roadway elements as needed
* Provide technical guidance and quality review for junior designers and drafters
* Interface with project engineers, project managers, and municipal clients to support project delivery
* Assist with constructability reviews, quantity takeoffs, estimates, and preparation of technical documents
* Maintain CAD standards, file organization, and data integrity throughout the project lifecycle
Education & Qualifications:
* High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s degree or Technical Certificate preferred
* 10+ years of total related design experience
* Strong emphasis on municipal utility and public works projects
* Demonstrated experience supporting the City of Houston or similar municipal agencies is strongly preferred
* Proven ability to lead / mentor technical staff
* Advanced proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D for municipal utility, sanitary sewer, and storm drainage design

Primary Duties
* Prepare plans for a wide variety of roadway design projects that include the following elements: geometric design, horizontal and vertical alignment, intersection layout, interchange layout, roadway drainage, and right of way plans.
* Produce 3D models, roadway plan, profile, and cross section plans, erosion control plans, drainage plans and profiles, utility plans, and signing and pavement marketing plans.
* Stay current with industry trends and standards related to CADD.
Education and Experience Requirements
* High School Diploma
* An AS in Drafting/Design Technology or Certification in CAD Foundations/Fundamentals or related field is preferred but not required.
* 5-10 years of CADD experience
* Ability to follow basic CAD standards and learn in-house standards.
* Ability to draw plans efficiently and accurately using MicroStation or AutoCAD.
* Good written and oral communication abilities and interpersonal skills
* Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs
* Must be highly organized, self-motivated and meticulous with details
